Welcome to the show, Junior Lake. The new smacked a double and logged three hits in his first four big league at-bats as the Cubs beat the Rockies 3-1 at Coors Field, Friday night.
It was a good night. Six of the Cubs starting fielders got hits, and Jeff Samardzija (6-9, 3.91 ERA) finally bounced back, tossing 7.1 innings of one-run baseball. He gave up four hits and three walks while striking out six.
It looks like the All-Star break did him some good, coming off two of the worst starts he’s made in 2013.
Kevin Gregg made it as interesting as he could in the 9th, though, allowing a walk and a base hit as he tip-toed through the middle of a Rockies order that includes Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Michael Cuddyer.
Luckily, he got Cuddyer to ground into a double play and all was well. But that shaky performance reminded me of a certain ex-closer who currently plays in the Dodgers organization. It was his 19th save of the season.
I don’t want to point anyone out specifically but his name rhymes with Shmarlos Schmarmol. And a closer that reminds me of Shmarlos is a scary closer.
That’s all for now, guys. The Cubs take on the Rockies at 7:10 PM CT. Go Cubs!
