Baseball Prospectus came out with its Top 50 prospects update today, and three Cubs rounded out the top 20. Javier Baez (10), Albert Almora (16) and Jorge Soler (18) all ranked more highly in the update than they did at the beginning of the season.
Baez, who was ranked 16 in the pre-2013 list, absolutely tore it up at High-A Daytona and moved into the top 10 just days after receiving the call to Double-A Tennessee, where he hit a home run in his first at-bat, Jul. 6.
Almora ranked 33 before the season and has entered the top 20 after putting up monster numbers (.353/.387/.519) in 38 games with Single-A Kane County. Had he not missed the beginning of the season with a hamate injury, he would be ranked even more highly, and would likely be playing in Daytona right now. As it stands, he will very likely see action there before the end of the season.
Soler was ranked 34 before the season and put up good numbers (.281/.343/.487) with eight homers in Daytona before he went down with a stress fracture in his left tibia. With out that injury, he may be in Double-A right now as well. He will likely return in five weeks.
Soler and Double-A 2B Arismendy Alcantara had been named to the All-Star Futures game just a day before Soler went down.
