The Cubs dealt OF Scott Hairston to the Nationals for pitching prospect Ivan Pineyro late Sunday night.
Hairston, batting .172 with eight homers this season, is under team control for the 2014 season as well, and has killed left-handed pitching lately, including hitting a home run Sun. before he was traded.
Pineyro, 21, was the Nationals’ no. 27 prospect coming into the 2013 season, and has pitched well. He posted a 3.14 ERA in 13 starts with just 17 walks and 66 strikeouts in 65 innings with Single-A Hagerstown, and was called up to High-A Potomac, where he has posted a 3.86 ERA in two starts. He will report to High-A Daytona.
I love this trade for the Cubs, who had no long-term use for Hairston and got yet another solid pitching prospect. Let’s see how he does in Daytona, but this is a prospect that I could see reaching it to a 2015 Cubs team, should he continue to pitch well.
In a corresponding move, P Brooks Raley was called up to take Hairston’s roster spot and will pitch out of the bullpen for now. Another move will likely be made later in which a right-handed bat comes up, but nothing has yet been announced.
That’s it for now, and go Cubs!
