So, you don’t just name drop the no. one prospect in baseball without reason. But Matt
Garza- Jurickson Profar rumors have been swirling, and it’s time to talk about them.
Dave Kaplan started it after an interview with Bob Nightengale. While I love the idea of the rumor, think about the logistics.
- Profar was ranked the no. one overall prospect in baseball before the 2013 season.
- Garza is a guy who very well may net the Cubs a top-100 prospect, but he is not under team control for 2014 and is not a rotation’s ace, so that kind of return on him would be very, very high.
- The Rangers would not be willing to include top pitching prospect Martin Perez in a deal, so why would they include their top hitting prospect in Profar?
- The Cubs were very close to trading Garza to the Rangers last season with Mike Olt as the center piece. Though Olt has had a tough season, it would be very difficult to imagine such a leap in a deal centerpiece. Especially given that while Garza has pitched well, he is coming off an injury that any team would attempt to use as leverage.
So, in conclusion, don’t get your hopes up. Profar is probably not coming to the Cubs, but I still believe that Garza will go to the rangers when all is said and done. Go Cubs!
